Gun Range Pr0n

I’ve been remiss in not showing the range I get to shoot at. It’s not as long as some (only 25-yard and 100-yard targets), but it’s sure pretty in winter and spring when the grass is green, the sky’s clear blue, and the sun keeps everything warm enough for t-shirts if you want — as it was this past weekend (warning: lots of pics below):

The rifle and pistol range is newly renovated with concrete stalls, each with a solid shooting benche, padded carpet squares for your guns or your elbows, a solid 3-height front rest, and a stool for sitting. The range sits high on a hill, and gets surprisingly little wind considering that it’s within sight of the Altamont windmills. (But when it does get windy, it’s COLD even in full sun!) The view from the top is spectacular:

That’s the pickup that will be taking Phil and me to Boomershoot in April.

If you walk to the edge of the gravel parking lot, you can look down at the shotgun range and main lodge, and the rest of the valley:

The orange strip is decades’ worth of dead clay birds. The clay birds come out of little underground bunkers that used to provide summer employment to Livermore’s sons & daughters, although I think there are automatic trap machines in there now.

Best of all, it’s only six bucks for members to shoot on the rifle/pistol range, with no time limit. That’s got to be one of the better deals out there I can think of.

What are the range fees where you shoot?

At the local outdoor range, $10 for all day, $8 for additional shooters. At the indoor range/gun club, no charge for shooting, but there’s an initiation fee (up to $350 now, I think), plus monthly dues of $20. Here’s a link for the outdoor range:

And here’s the indoor range/gun club:

$350! Ouch! On the other hand, that looks like a pretty sweet indoor range setup.

I feel fortunate to have found a place (an hour outside Philly, no less) where the annual fee was $125 but I got a year and a half for it. 25 yd Pistol range, archery range, shotgun/muzzleloader range, 100 yd rifle range, 100-500 meter silhouette range, and clays area. It’s awesome, and I don’t take it for granted. Sort of.

$13/hour + $0.50 per extra target (1st one is free) at Red’s Indoor Shooting Range in Pflugerville Texas. About as nice a bunch of people as you are likely to meet anywhere, and the sharing of novel firearms is a strong tradition there. My son has had the unique experience of shooting both a Beretta CRX-4 9mm carbine and a percussion rifle there on the same day, borrowed from fellow shooters. I’ve always felt undergunned compared to my fellow Texans there.

The ancient and dilapidated outdoor range in Manor texas just recently closed its operations, and it was $7 per person, and $7 per every gun past the first gun. While it made no sense, it worked. Of course, that was where on a given Sunday both the local instructors would be working out their concealed carry draws at one end of the range, and in the middle the gang bangers would be BADLY mishandling their new AK-clones, and at the other end the Mil-surp retirees would be shooting single holes at 100yards with their K-31s and Swedish Mausers. An interesting place, that is no more.

The indoor range closest to me (the only one I have been to as yet) has a daily fee of $7.50 for as long as you would like to spend on the range. I understand the yearly membership is something like $125, but I, unfortunately, do not have the time to go often enough to make it worthwhile. Living in the country’s largest (geographically speaking) city, I do not even have the foggiest of clues where the nearest outdoor range is… Never had the need, being somewhat lacking in the long-gun department.

Stand by for a brag….

I belong to the douglas Ridge Rifle Club in Boring, OR.

That boring as in “what boring is that rifle in”.

We have archery, indoor 50 foot pistol (any handgun caliber) which doubles as a Junior program range, outdoor 100/200 rifle ranges, metal silhouette range, 1,000 yard range (only one day a week, the rest of the ranges have to be closed when it’s in use), skeet, trap and 5-stand shotgun ranges.

No additional charge, no time limit, yearly dues $200 (can be reduced with work party credits), and guests are $5. Range operates 7 days/365, daylight only except the indoor range which is available 24 hours a day, and has the latest anti-lead HVAC equipment.

Lots of organized shooting here, with about a dozen major disciplines, but also a lot of just plain range time.

I’ve got a semi-improved(has benches)range on forest service land that goes out to about 100yds, farther if you hike up the side of the mountain. It’s free. And I’ve got BLM land about 30 min. away that I can shoot out to as far as I want. Free also. The nearest indoor range would be a 2 hour drive to Denver, never been so I don’t know the cost.
