   Cold water: he has to be air-dropped to get going. Not super useful as a commuter platform.

   Hence the title. If I can’t launch from my driveway or roof top and land on the same without a parachute (and live), the commuter practicality is a bit thin.

   But still, the coolness factor is high…

   You could commute in a gyrocopter. Ancient tech, but works. On a windy day, you can launch upwind with zero run, and even on no-wind days, the average Rotax-powered 1-man GC will launch in about 60-80 feet with a good rate of climb. Cross country speeds to 60 or so. Vertical landing possible, but not recommended. Dono if VFR only, but not much room for instruments…

   I’ve thought about building or buying one, just for fun, if nothing else.

   And the hoverbike is a ways off from being ready (not seeing a lot of lateral stability with that thing)
