The Specialty Pistol “World Championships”

It’s not official, but Richard Mertz’s handgun competition at his place in Wyoming might as well be the World Championships of long-range pistol shooting. IHMSA shooters take note — this one goes out to 1K.

I bunked with Rich Mertz at the 2006 Bower Shooting Clinic. He’s a prince of a man — genuinely impressive, and a really nice fellow. He makes the MOA Maximum pistols. Did I mention I want one? In .257 Weatherby? He’ll do it — I just need to scare up the cash. These are expensive pistols, but they’re worth every penny — they hold MOA (or often, much less) out to 1,000 yards. I’ve seen it first-hand.

Anyway, click the first link above to see a fine article about the first annual Richard Mertz Handgun Competition in 2007. This year’s event will be in June. Send in your registration fees soon!

Yep, back when I was an active IHMSA shooter these were impressive pistols. But since IHMSA only went to 200 meters, nobody could tell just how superior they were.

Interestingly, last year’s 500-yard winner used a Contender, and the 750-yard winner used a borrowed XP-100. But yeah, at 1000 yards the MOA shined.
